TEXAS HS FOOTBALL - Our 2026 UIL State Contenders 5A-6A
THE BEST PROGRAMS IN TEXAS ARE ABOUT TO COLLIDE.
Every summer, the question is the same - who's taking home the hardware in December? Who has the roster, the coaching, the culture, and the relentless will to be standing at AT&T Stadium when it's all said and done? Pitch Threads went through every classification, every division, and identified the programs that have the pedigree, the talent, and the hunger to make a serious run at a state title in 2026. This is not a prediction. This is a warning.
5A DIVISION 2 - THE MOST LOADED DIVISION IN TEXAS
SOUTH OAK CLIFF - DALLAS, TX
Three titles in five years. SOC is not building toward something - they ARE the standard. The Bears went 14-3 in 2025 and won it all over Randle 35-19, claiming their third state championship and cementing themselves as the premier program in 5A-D2. They come back in 2026 with a target on their back and absolutely nothing to apologize for. Dallas' program. Dallas' city. Dallas' identity. When you put on that gold and black, you already know what it means. The schedule doesn't scare them either - matchups with Duncanville, Randle, North Shore, and Poteet tell you SOC is signing up for war every single week on purpose. That's what champions do.
PORT NECHES-GROVES - PORT NECHES, TX
PNG is one of the most storied programs in Southeast Texas history and they are not done writing chapters. Four state titles, with the most recent coming in 2023 over SOC 20-17 - a game that proved they can go toe to toe with anyone in the state. They went 12-2 last year and fell in the quarterfinals, which means this program goes into 2026 with unfinished business and a chip that doesn't come off. Matchups against Memorial, West Brook, Dayton, and Galena Park prove PNG is not dodging anybody on the way back to the top.
ARGYLE EAGLES - ARGYLE, TX
Argyle is one of those programs that just keeps reloading. Two state titles in 2013 and 2020, and a 12-2 year in 2025 that ended in the quarterfinals - and they are coming back hungry. Their last title was a dominant 49-21 win over Lindale, and that standard has never left the building. The Eagles play in one of the most competitive areas in North Texas, and their 2026 schedule reflects that - trips to Terrell, a home showdown with Highland Park, Lovejoy, and The Colony. Argyle doesn't need a rebuilding year. They don't do rebuilding years. They do runs.
CELINA BOBCATS - CELINA, TX
Nine. State. Titles. There is no program in 5A with more hardware on the wall than Celina, and they are not done adding to the collection. With championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2024, the Bobcats are the definition of a dynasty. They went 14-1 last year as semifinalists, demolished Kilgore 55-21 in their last title run, and they are built to do it again. Frisco PC, Frisco, Independence, and Denison are all on the 2026 slate. Celina doesn't just show up to win districts. They show up to win everything.
ANNA COYOTES - ANNA, TX
Anna is the definition of a program that arrived and didn't leave. One state title in 2023 - a dominant 26-0 shutout of Chapel Hill - and they have been a consistent postseason threat ever since. They went 10-2 last year and reached the regional semis, proving that 2023 was no fluke. Matchups with Ennis, Frisco PC, Richland, and Frisco make their 2026 schedule a real test early. The Coyotes are built to compete, and they are going to remind people of that all season long.
5A DIVISION 1 - WHERE LEGENDS ARE MADE
DESOTO EAGLES - DESOTO, TX
Let's get something straight right away - DeSoto just dropped down from 6A-D2. A program with four state titles in 2016, 2022, 2023, and 2025 - defending 6A-D2 champions - now playing 5A-D1. Think about what that means for everyone else in this bracket. The Eagles went 13-3 last year and dismantled C.E. King 55-27 in the title game, and they didn't lose a step coming down a classification. Sarod Baker, LeMarcus Summers, Rickshown Hanks, and Elijah Edwards are names that opposing coaches are already losing sleep over. This is not a rebuild. This is a takeover. DeSoto in 5A-D1 is the most dangerous situation in Texas high school football right now - and everybody knows it.
DENTON RYAN - DENTON, TX
Denton Ryan is always, always dangerous. Three state titles in 2001, 2002, and 2020, and a 12-2 season in 2025 that ended in the quarterfinals. Their last championship was a 59-14 demolition of Cedar Hill - the kind of score that tells you everything about what this program is capable of when they are locked in. The 2026 schedule starts with fire - Carroll, Lone Star, Timberview, and Lewisville in the first four weeks. When Ryan gets into the playoffs, they become a completely different animal. Don't sleep on the Raiders - not even for a second.
RICHMOND RANDLE - HOUSTON, TX
15-1 and a state finalist. Let that sink in. Randle went to the title game in 2025 and came up just short against SOC 38-35 in one of the best games of the year. That heartbreak doesn't break a program like Randle - it builds them. Their 2024 championship came over SOC in a thriller, and they are absolutely motivated to get back and finish the job. Matchups with Foster, Travis, Iowa County, and Lamar make up a gauntlet of a schedule. Randle is not coming to participate. They are coming to reclaim what they believe is theirs.
FRISCO LONE STAR - FRISCO, TX
Zero titles - but 15-1 and a state final appearance in 2025 tells you everything you need to know about where this program is headed. Frisco Lone Star is knocking on the door and at 15-1, they practically broke it down. The Rangers have the talent, they have the momentum, and they have the hunger of a program that has never won it all and knows exactly how close they are. A trip to Denton Ryan in Week 1 of 2026 is a statement game right out of the gate. Lone Star is not a rising program anymore. They are a program that is here - and they want their first ring.
HIGHLAND PARK - DALLAS, TX
Seven state titles - 1944, 1945, 1957, 2005, 2016, 2017, and 2018. A tradition that stretches back over 80 years. Highland Park is one of the most respected programs in the entire state of Texas, and they do not go away quietly. The Scots went 12-2 last year as quarterfinalists, and their last title was a 27-17 win over Shadow Creek. The 2026 schedule features Lewisville, Argyle, Naaman Forest, and Birdville. Highland Park is always a few plays away from another deep run, and when the talent is there, this program knows exactly what to do with it.
6A DIVISION 1 - THE MOST ELITE BRACKET IN THE STATE
NORTH SHORE - HOUSTON, TX
Six state titles - 2003, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2025. Defending champions. North Shore went 14-2 last year and shut down Duncanville 10-7 in the title game - a defensive masterpiece on the biggest stage in Texas football. They are the program that every team in 6A-D1 has circled on their calendar and nobody wants to see in December. The 2026 schedule features Lancaster, SOC, Summer Creek, and CE King in non-district. North Shore does not coast. They do not slow down. They are the measuring stick of 6A football in this state and everyone knows it.
DUNCANVILLE - DUNCANVILLE, TX
Duncanville lost the 2025 title game to North Shore 10-7. That is a team that was one score away from being back-to-back state champions. Three titles in 1998, 2022, and 2023 - including a 49-33 demolition of North Shore for their last one - and a 12-2 record last year as state finalists. The Panthers are not rebuilding. They are reloading with a vengeance. A 2026 schedule that includes Allen Week 1, DeSoto Week 3, North Crowley and Mountain Lake Ridge later in the year means there are no easy weeks in Duncanville. Duncanville vs. North Shore in December again is not a matter of if - it's a matter of when.
ALLEN EAGLES - ALLEN, TX
Five state titles - 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017. A stadium that holds over 18,000 people. A program that has been synonymous with Texas high school football excellence for over a decade. Allen went 14-1 last year as semifinalists, and their last title came over Lake Travis 35-33 in a game that nobody in attendance will ever forget. The 2026 schedule opens with Duncanville, then DeSoto, then Carroll, then Prosper - four elite programs in the first month of the season. Allen is not just a contender. They are THE program that everyone else is chasing in 6A-D1.
LAKE TRAVIS - AUSTIN, TX
Six state titles in ten years - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2016. Lake Travis had one of the most dominant runs in the history of Texas high school football, and they are not done. The Cavaliers went 14-1 last year and fell in the regional semis, which for a program of this caliber is nothing but fuel. Their last title came against The Woodlands 41-13, and the 2026 schedule features Midway, Dripping Springs, Westlake, and Round Rock. Lake Travis and Westlake in October is one of the best regular season rivalry games in the state every single year. The Cavaliers are always a threat to make a deep run when everything clicks.
SUMMER CREEK - HOUSTON, TX
Two state titles in 2012 and 2013, and a program that has been building back toward the top ever since. Summer Creek went 11-3 last year as quarterfinalists and the 2026 schedule includes North Crowley, Humble, North Shore, and CE King - every game is a test, every week is a battle. The Bulldogs play in one of the most competitive regions in Texas football, which means by the time they get to the playoffs, they are ready for anything. When Summer Creek gets rolling, they are one of the hardest teams in the state to slow down.
6A DIVISION 2 - TRADITION MEETS HUNGER
SOUTHLAKE CARROLL - SOUTHLAKE, TX
Eight state titles - 1988, 1992, 1993, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2011. One of the most decorated programs in the entire history of Texas high school football. Carroll went 14-1 last year as semifinalists, and their last title came against Hightower 36-29. The fire to get back to AT&T Stadium is burning as hot as it has ever been. The 2026 schedule opens with a trip to Jenks - one of the premier programs in Oklahoma - before coming home for North Crowley and then Allen Week 3. If Carroll gets hot in November and December, there is no more dangerous program in the state of Texas.
SHELDON C.E. KING - HOUSTON, TX
No titles yet - but 13-3 and a state final appearance in 2025 tells you this program has arrived and is not going anywhere. CE King's best run in program history ended against DeSoto 55-27 in that final, which stings - but that experience of playing on the biggest stage is invaluable going into 2026. Matchups with Conroe, Cy-Fair, North Shore, and Summer Creek make their non-district schedule as competitive as it gets. CE King is done being overlooked. They are ready to finish what they started.
VANDEGRIFT - AUSTIN, TX
One state title in 2024 - a statement 24-17 win over Carroll, one of the most historic programs in the state. The Vipers went 12-3 last year as semifinalists, proving they can sustain success after a championship. The 2026 schedule includes Brennan, Liberty Hill, Vista Ridge, and Rouse - a tough road that will prepare them for whatever November brings. Vandegrift is not a one-hit wonder. They have the culture and the coaching to be back in this conversation every single year.
DENTON GUYER - DENTON, TX
Two state titles in 2012 and 2013, and a program that has been one of the most consistent forces in 6A over the past decade. Guyer went 11-3 last year as quarterfinalists, and their last championship was a 31-14 win over Brennan. The 2026 schedule features Melissa, Waxahachie, Little Elm, and Marcus - no easy nights in Denton. The Wildcats play in a loaded area of North Texas where every game matters and every week prepares you for the playoffs. When Guyer gets on a roll, they are one of the hardest teams in the state to slow down.
WAXAHACHIE - WAXAHACHIE, TX
Waxahachie is a program that has been quietly building toward something special, and 2026 might be the year it all comes together. One state title back in 1992 - a 28-24 win over A&M Consolidated - but this current group has the look of a team that is ready to add to that legacy. They went 11-2 last year as quarterfinalists, and the 2026 schedule does not let up - Coppell, at Guyer, North Crowley, and Duncanville. If Waxahachie can navigate that gauntlet and carry momentum into the playoffs, they are a program nobody wants to see in the bracket.
THE ROAD TO AT&T STADIUM STARTS NOW.
Twenty programs. Four divisions. One common goal. A state championship is the only thing that matters when December arrives in Texas, and every team on this list has the talent, the tradition, and the hunger to make a run. The schedules are brutal. The competition is elite. And the margin between a state champion and going home early has never been thinner.
Who's ready? The 2026 season is coming - and Texas high school football is about to remind everybody why it's the greatest game in the country.
