TEXAS HS BASEBALL - Area Playoffs Preview 4A D1 & D2
THE AREA ROUND IS HERE. EVERY GAME IS ELIMINATION BASEBALL NOW.
The regular season is over. The bi-district round is done. And now we are down to the teams that have earned the right to keep playing. The 4A area round kicks off May 9th and every single matchup on this bracket has something massive on the line. One series. Winner moves on. Loser goes home. This is what Texas high school baseball is all about.
4A DIVISION 1
Riverside vs. Hereford
The top half of Quadrant 1 opens with Riverside against Hereford in what figures to be a competitive West Texas matchup. Both programs have battled through their districts to get here and neither one is going to roll over. The winner advances to face the winner of Mineral Wells and Decatur - a North Texas matchup that has region-wide implications.
Mineral Wells vs. Decatur
Mineral Wells and Decatur know each other well and this is the kind of rivalry matchup that playoff baseball was made for. Decatur comes in as the higher seed but Mineral Wells has the home crowd familiarity and the motivation of a program that has been building toward exactly this moment. The winner of this half of Quadrant 1 has a legitimate path to the regional semifinals.
Ysleta vs. West Plains
West Plains comes in as the higher seed and they have been one of the more consistent programs in their region all season. Ysleta at the four seed is going to have to be sharp from the first pitch. This is a matchup where the higher seed has the advantage on paper - but playoff baseball has a way of making paper mean nothing.
Stephenville vs. Springtown
Stephenville against Springtown is one of the more intriguing matchups in the entire 4A-D1 bracket. Both programs are competitive, both have earned their way here, and both know that a loss sends them home for the summer. The game is being played at Godley High School which adds a neutral site intensity to an already high-stakes series.
Celina vs. Life Waxahachie
Celina. A program with the kind of pedigree that makes opponents nervous just seeing the name on the bracket. The Bobcats come in as the higher seed and they have been one of the most consistent programs in North Texas all season long. Life Waxahachie at the 12 seed has a very difficult task in front of them - but they earned their spot and they are not going to back down.
Sulphur Springs vs. Lindale
This is one of the best matchups in Quadrant 2. Sulphur Springs against Lindale - two East Texas programs that have been competing at a high level all season. The game is being played at Forney High School on a neutral site, which levels the playing field and puts everything on the performance. This one could go either way and that is exactly what makes it worth watching.
Sanger vs. Alvarado
Sanger as the nine seed against Alvarado at the 12 seed - a matchup between two programs that have been fighting for playoff positioning all season. Sanger holds the seeding advantage but Alvarado has shown the ability to compete with anyone in their region. This is a game that could easily go to extra innings.
Pleasant Grove vs. Kilgore
Pleasant Grove against Kilgore is East Texas baseball at its finest. Two programs with proud traditions, both hungry to advance, both knowing this is win or go home. Pleasant Grove holds the seeding edge but Kilgore is a program that never makes it easy on anyone. The winner of this one has earned every bit of their regional semifinal berth.
Bullard vs. Livingston
Bullard comes in as the 17 seed against Livingston at 19 - but seeds mean less and less as you get deeper into the bracket. Both programs have earned their spot and both are capable of making a run. The winner advances toward a potential matchup with Nacogdoches and the right side of Quadrant 3 starts to open up.
Almeta Crawford vs. China Spring
China Spring has been one of the more dangerous programs in Central Texas all season and they come into this matchup with confidence. Almeta Crawford at the 21 seed is going to have to play their best baseball of the year just to keep up. China Spring is a program that knows how to win in May and this is a great opportunity to prove it again.
Vidor vs. Hargrave
Vidor against Hargrave at Deer Park High School - a Southeast Texas matchup on a neutral site with everything on the line. Both programs have been competitive in their districts all year and this is the kind of game that Southeast Texas baseball fans circle on the calendar. Neutral site, elimination baseball, two hungry programs. This one has the ingredients for a classic.
Bellville vs. Gatesville
Bellville against Gatesville rounds out the bottom of Quadrant 3 in what should be a competitive series between two programs that have earned their playoff spots the hard way. Bellville holds the seeding advantage but Gatesville is not a team that is going to make it easy on anyone.
Fredericksburg vs. Uvalde
Fredericksburg against Uvalde is one of the most compelling matchups in the entire 4A-D1 bracket. Both programs have been solid all season and the Hill Country vs. South Texas flavor of this matchup makes it one to watch. Fredericksburg holds the seeding edge but Uvalde is a program with a proud tradition that shows up ready in May.
Needville vs. Calallen
Calallen. That name carries weight in Texas high school baseball. The program from Corpus Christi has been one of the most consistent playoff programs in 4A for years and they are not going to be easy out for anyone in this bracket. Needville at the 23 seed has to be the underdog here - but they earned their spot and they are going to compete.
Davenport vs. La Vernia
Two programs from the San Antonio area going at each other in what should be one of the most competitive matchups of the area round. Davenport against La Vernia - both know each other well, both have been winning all season, and both understand that this is the game that defines their year. This is the matchup in Quadrant 4 worth watching the closest.
El Campo vs. Tuloso-Midway
El Campo against Tuloso-Midway closes out the 4A-D1 bracket in what is a South Texas showdown with serious playoff implications. Both programs have been consistent winners and the winner of this series has a legitimate path toward the regional finals. El Campo holds the seeding edge but Tuloso-Midway is a dangerous opponent that has been here before.
4A DIVISION 2
Fabens vs. Randall
The 4A-D2 bracket opens in West Texas with Fabens against Randall - two programs that have earned their way to the area round through competitive districts. Randall holds the seeding advantage but Fabens is a program with the kind of home-grown passion that makes them dangerous in elimination baseball.
Liberty vs. Eagle Mountain
Liberty against Eagle Mountain at Hanner Sports Complex in what is one of the more intriguing North Texas matchups of the area round. Both programs have been competitive all season and the neutral site setting puts everything squarely on the field. Eagle Mountain holds the slight seeding edge but Liberty is not a team that is going to be intimidated.
Clint vs. Canyon
Canyon comes in as the four seed against Clint and this is a matchup that West Texas baseball fans have been anticipating. Canyon has been one of the more consistent programs in their area and they come in with the expectation of advancing. Clint is going to make them earn every single out.
Brock vs. Benbrook
Brock against Benbrook is a North Texas matchup between two programs that have been building toward this moment all season. Brock comes in as the higher seed and has been one of the more dominant small-school programs in their area. Benbrook is going to have to play the game of their season to pull off the upset.
Aubrey vs. Godley
Aubrey against Godley at Haltom High School - a North Texas rivalry on a neutral site with everything on the line. Both programs have been competitive in District 5-5A all season and they know each other well. This is exactly the kind of game that could go seven innings and still feel like it needs more. Neutral site. Elimination baseball. Two programs that are ready.
Sunnyvale vs. Carthage
Sunnyvale against Carthage is one of the best matchups in the entire 4A-D2 bracket. Sunnyvale has been one of the more consistent programs in the Dallas area all season and they come in with momentum. Carthage is a program with a proud East Texas tradition that always shows up in the playoffs. This one is going to be competitive from the first pitch to the last.
Panther Creek vs. Kennedale
Panther Creek against Kennedale at Kennedale High School - a home game for one side that gives Kennedale an advantage they are going to try to use from the jump. Panther Creek as the ten seed is going to have to battle the crowd and the opponent. This is the kind of game where the environment makes a difference.
North Lamar vs. Spring Hill
North Lamar against Spring Hill closes out Quadrant 2 in what is an East Texas matchup between two programs that have earned their playoff spots. Both teams are evenly matched on paper and this series could easily go the distance. The winner earns the right to keep playing and that is motivation enough.
Hudson vs. Hardin-Jefferson
Hudson against Hardin-Jefferson is a Southeast Texas matchup that has been circled since the bracket came out. Both programs have been excellent all season and both understand what is at stake. Hardin-Jefferson comes in with the slight seeding edge but Hudson is a program that has been here before and they are ready to compete.
Freeman vs. Robinson
Robinson against Freeman is a Central Texas showdown that has serious regional implications. Robinson holds the seeding edge and has been one of the more consistent programs in their area all season. Freeman is going to have to be locked in from the start to keep up with a program that has been playing well all year.
Silsbee vs. Hampshire-Fannett
Silsbee comes in as the 18 seed against Hampshire-Fannett and this is a Southeast Texas matchup that should be one of the more competitive games of the area round. Silsbee has been playing well down the stretch and they come in with confidence. Hampshire-Fannett earned their spot the hard way and they are not going to give it up easily.
La Grange vs. Salado
La Grange against Salado is the matchup that closes out Quadrant 3 in what is a Central Texas battle between two programs with something to prove. Salado has been competitive all season and comes in as the higher seed. La Grange is a program with a proud tradition that shows up ready in May baseball. This one is going to be decided in the late innings.
Canyon Lake vs. Floresville
Canyon Lake against Floresville is a Hill Country vs. South Texas matchup that should be one of the better series of the area round. Both programs have earned their spots and both come in with winning records and the confidence that comes from a strong regular season. Canyon Lake holds the seeding edge but Floresville is going to make them work for every run.
Brazosport vs. Robstown
Brazosport against Robstown is a South Texas matchup between two programs that know how to play playoff baseball. Brazosport holds the higher seed but Robstown is a program with the kind of tradition that makes them dangerous in elimination games. This one has the potential to be one of the better series of the entire 4A-D2 bracket.
Wimberley vs. Navarro
Wimberley against Navarro - two programs from the Hill Country and South Texas corridor going head to head with a regional semifinal berth on the line. Wimberley holds the seeding advantage and has been one of the more consistent teams in their area all season. Navarro is not going to make it easy - they earned their spot and they are going to compete until the last out.
Sinton vs. Zapata
Sinton. That name carries weight in South Texas baseball. The Pirates have been one of the most dominant programs in their classification for years and they come into this area round as one of the favorites to make a deep run. Zapata has earned their spot and will compete - but Sinton is a program that is built for May baseball and they come in ready to prove it.

Every team left in this bracket has worked all season to earn this moment. The regular season records are history. What matters now is what happens on the field in a best-of-three series when everything is on the line. Texas 4A baseball is loaded with talent, tradition, and hungry programs ready to make their run.
